How to Manage Stress at Work

For any employee, a few simple habits can help create a month with less stress. Here are the details.

1. Follow the 80% rule

Not every task can be completed, so aiming for 80% is more realistic. Perfectionism is one of the main causes of stress at work. A useful principle is: done is better than perfect.

2. Organise your schedule

Use the time available to create a clear priority plan. List every task, rank it, and divide larger items into 45-minute blocks separated by five-minute breaks to maintain concentration and effectiveness.

3. Avoid anticipating problems

Avoid negative thoughts that reduce productivity and performance. One helpful technique is a “worry box”: put those thoughts aside temporarily so your mind can focus on what needs to be done now.

4. Stay calm

Do not let nervousness and its effects—headaches, stomach tension or muscle pain—take over. Try two breathing breaks each day: inhale for five seconds and exhale for ten seconds, for example around 11:00 and 17:00.

5. Get some fresh air

Walking is a simple and effective way to clear your head. Use part of your journey between home and work or a break to walk. Movement oxygenates the brain and gives both body and mind a moment to relax.
